Ascending Rocky Ridge

"The day we ascended Rocky Ridge is a day I'll never forget as long as I live."
by Michael Bedard
As we broke camp on a bitter cold morning in October, my father was on the burial detail for those who had passed in the night.  Mother insisted that we stay behind unitl father could finish the sad work.  After a short graveside service we left to join up with the rest of the company.  As we started to ascend the frozen ridge, father collapsed and fell in the snow.  He tried two or three times to get up with mother's help, then finally convinced her to go on, saying he would come on later when he felt rested.  In my mother's worried eyes I could see that she knew in her heart that he had given out.  Later the next day Sarah's father, was among the deceased.
